Archeological Museum Located in Rethymno town it exhibits relics found around the prefecture, dating from the Neolithic period to the Roman years. Among the exhibits are jewellery, tools, figurines and spearheads from the Neolithic period which were found in the Gerani Cave and in the cave of Ellenes Amariou.
The Historical and Folklore Museum This museum exhibits a rich collection of local weaving art and techniques, traditional embroidered national and regional costumes, lace, basket-weaving, ceramic art, paintings and various items of folk art. The Marine Museum A pleasant museum has on display numerous shells and some vertebrates, sponges and fishes.
The Centre of Contemporary Art Houses a rich collection of works by the local artist Kanakakis and a collection of representative modern Greek painting. Exhibitions of modern art are organised regularly in the gallery.
Natural History Museum The Temenos Mastampa mosque or Mosque of Velli Pasa was built on the ruins of Catholic temple of Saint Onoufrios. The minaret dates back to 1789, making it the oldest minaret in Rethymno. Restoration of the mosque is in progress to accommodate an annex of the Goulandri Museum of Natural History.
Melidoni Cave Melidoni cave is about 2 kms northwest of Melidoni village and its archaeological findings are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno. The cave was also the mythical home of Talos - the giant bronze protector of Crete. Legend says that the sorceress Medea removed his protective thorn and he bled to death. |
