PICASSO

There is a deep root and exceptional bond between Grecotel and Pablo Picasso. An amazing collection of rare original Picasso ceramics adorns the “Minotaur” restaurant at Amirandes since 2013, inspired by the artist’s admiration of the mythical Cretan creature. Pablo Picasso drew himself as a Minotaur, the mythical half-man half-taurus (bull) creature that lived in the Labyrinth of the palace of Knossos, the most prominent archaeological site in Crete, just a few kilometres away from Amirandes. He adored ceramics and created them for 25 years (1947-1973).

The distinctive ceramic works showcased at “Minotaur” belong to Picasso’s exceptional Madoura collection, pointing out the place they were made, the Madoura Pottery in Vallauris, France. Sculptural vases, pitchers in pristine condition encapsulate the essence of his impressive ceramic output, as he was renowned as a Painter and Sculptor in Clay.

Picasso’s enticing fascination with the Greek mythology and fabled creatures such as the Minotaur, are the epicenter of the exhibition “Pablo Picasso: the Joy of Life” in Crete. Beyond a cultural event with international impact, “Pablo Picasso: the Joy of Life” is a personal, artistic and emotional tribute of extraordinary people, Paloma Picasso and Professor Nikolaos Stambolidis, the Acropolis Museum Director, to a remarkable place in the world: Ancient Eleftherna outside of Rethymno. It is rare to see in such an intimate way, the origins of a legend’s soul and creativity: 62 selected works of Pablo Picasso, most of them exhibited for the first time from Paloma Picasso’s personal collection and selected pieces from the Madoura collection, meet 24 antiquities from the Ancient Eleftherna Museum.

‘The Joy of Life’, captures the light, animals, nature, mythical creatures and optimism and invites every visitor to a captivating journey and illuminates Pablo Picasso’s works and inspirations in a discourse with ancient masterpieces.
