The Holy Monastery of Arkadi in Rethymnon, Crete, is a place of special historical interest, known for the events that took place during the revolution of 1866. The monastery is built on the edge of a high plateau. 16 km from the hotel, Open Daily

The ancient city’s main attractions are located on the Prines and Nisi hills, which belong to the modern villages of Archaia Eleutherna and Eleutherna respectively. Hellenic fortification walls, Roman buildings, and a Christian Basilica built on top of a Hellenic cemetery were uncovered at the site of Katsivelos on the east foot of Prines hill. According to the dedicatory inscription to the Archangel Michael, the Basilica was built in AD 420-450 (a later date has also been suggested) and destroyed in the seventh century AD. 18 km from the hotel, Open Daily 08:00 – 20:00 (except Tuesday)

St. Francesco was the main temple of the Franciscan Order Monastery. The architecture of the building and its ornaments are very interesting. It belongs to the single-aisle basilica type with a wooden roof, a transverse aisle, and two side chapels. A crossed vault covers its northeast side, while its southeast side is decorated with arcs worked in marble and includes an impressive Corinthian-style doorframe. During the Turkish occupation, the temple was turned into an “Imaret” (a shelter for the poor). It was also used as a cultural center until 1996. It was recently renovated to accommodate the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection of the Prefecture of Rethymno. 14 km from the hotel.

Fortezza Fort dominates the hill Palekastro beside the old town of Rethymnon and is one of the biggest fortresses of the Venetian Era. It has been built on the site of the citadel of ancient Rithimna and the Temple of Artemis Rokkea. The grand pentagonal fort was built in 1573 and has a 1300-meter-long perimeter. The Guora Gate is the main entrance of the Venetian city walls that protected the city of Rethymno. The gate was built in the years of Rector Rettore Jocopo Guoro (1566-1568). Part of the gate is preserved at the beginning of the street “Ethnikis Antistaseos”. It is 2,60 m. wide, built with carved stones and creating a semicircular arc on the top. According to traveler J. Gerola, a relief of the lion of St. Marcos (the Venetian emblem) existed at the top of the gate. Today the relief is preserved in two pieces and is stored at Loggia’s courtyard. 11 km from the hotel.

In Margarites, visitors can walk through alleys lined with large clay pots—the famous daisy pitchers—outside each house, ceramics hung on the walls, and jars that decorate the flower gardens. Giorgos Hatziparaskos, an 86-year-old baker from Crete, is one of the last people in Greece who still creates the country’s iconic multi-layered phyllo dough by hand. In an artful display, the skilled baker twirls the impossibly thin dough in the air, allowing it to form a large air bubble as it drops lightly onto the table. This impressive move not only wows tourists but is also essential in making the middle of the phyllo dough extra thin. The dough is stretched so thinly that you could read through it, and a piece of linen is placed over it to soak up any excess moisture. A traditional bakery run by Stefanos Alexandrakis is located in a prime position in the center of Rethymno’s old town, on Tsagri Street, a street which welcomes a flow of locals and tourists. Stefanos Alexandrakis arrives at his bakery at three in the morning every day to prepare the oven fire and begin kneading and baking products so that his handmade goods can be ready to be served from 8AM onwards.
